Job Title: Head of Technology

The Opportunity

Koa Academy is looking for an experienced Head of Technology to lead our technology function through our next phase of growth.

Technology is central to how we deliver an individualised, robust online-school experience at scale. The Head of Technology will shape our technology strategy, lead the development of Koa’s proprietary education technology platform, and oversee software development, systems integration, IT operations, cybersecurity and data governance.

This is a senior leadership role for someone who can lead and develop a strong team, provide credible technical direction and turn ambitious ideas into achievable plans.

Key Responsibilities

  • Team leadership: Lead and develop the IT team across software development, systems, infrastructure, information security and technical support.
  • Team culture and performance: Build a collaborative, accountable and high-performing team by setting clear expectations, developing individual strengths and creating opportunities for ongoing growth.
  • Technology strategy: Develop and deliver a multi-year technology strategy aligned with Koa’s educational model and growth ambitions.
  • Platform development: Lead the continued development and evolution of Koa’s proprietary  education technology platform.
  • Roadmap and prioritisation: Translate organisational priorities and user needs into a clear, costed and achievable technology roadmap.
  • Architecture and scalability: Guide technical and architectural decisions to ensure Koa’s systems remain secure, reliable, integrated and scalable.
  • Delivery and governance: Establish effective processes for prioritisation, development, testing, release management and technical governance.
  • Security and data: Oversee cybersecurity, POPIA compliance, data governance, access management, disaster recovery and business continuity.
  • Executive advice: Advise executive leadership on technology opportunities, risks, investment decisions, AI and emerging technologies.
  • Budget and partners: Manage technology budgets, vendors and external partners, including build-versus-buy and resourcing decisions.
  • Cross-functional collaboration: Build strong collaboration between the technology team and Koa’s academic, operational and executive teams.

Skills & Experience

  • The ability to move confidently between strategy, technical decisions, team leadership and practical problem-solving.
  • Demonstrated experience leading, developing and motivating a multidisciplinary technology or engineering team.
  • A strong people leader who creates clarity, builds accountability, develops talent and enables teams to perform at a high level.
  • Experience establishing effective team structures, ways of working, performance expectations and development pathways.
  • The ability to communicate technical priorities clearly, influence senior stakeholders and build strong cross-functional relationships.
  • A strong track record of scaling software platforms or technology functions within a growing organisation.
  • Experience developing and implementing technology strategy in support of wider organisational goals.
  • Strong knowledge of cloud environments, APIs, systems integration, databases and modern software development.
  • Experience overseeing the delivery of complex internal or customer-facing software platforms.
  • A solid understanding of cybersecurity, data governance, system reliability and business continuity.
  • Experience managing budgets, vendors, external partners and build-versus-buy decisions.
  • Experience in EdTech, online education or environments managing sensitive learner or personal data would be advantageous.

Koa Academy online school is seeking a high school educator with IEB experience to oversee and teach English up to Grade 12. Proven leadership experience will be beneficial.

Location:  Completely remote work, online, based in South Africa.

Typical work hours: 40 hours per week. 

Contract Type: Permanent

Start Date: January 2027

Requirements

  • At least 4 years experience teaching English up to Grade 12
  • SACE registered, with a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree with PGCE, BEd or other teaching qualification.
  • In-depth knowledge and passion for English.
  • Experience teaching IEB will be beneficial.
  • Leadership experience will be beneficial.
  • Enthusiastic and passionate about the opportunities in online education.
  • Positive and adaptive in an innovative and changing environment.
  • Confident and engaging communicator with both children and parents.
  • Strong IT skills and very comfortable in the online space.
  • Working from home with an environment conducive to leading online classes.

    • Creation of digital coursework on our LMS.
    • Running of live lessons in large and small groups of learners.
    • Ensuring high academic standards in line with the IEB curriculum requirements.
    • Create and curate content and assessments aligned with the IEB curriculum.
    • Track and give feedback on the progress of each individual child.
    • Conduct academic support including subject-relevant interventions.
    • Implement and maintain administrative systems relating to their subject.
    • Facilitate regular Pod Connect sessions, aimed at developing key soft skills and building emotional intelligence.
    • Maintain consistent and clear communication channels with parents with the goal of fostering a partnership between the school and its parents.
    • Regularly participate in online school socials or clubs.
    • Lead or work with integrity as a team member with other Koa staff in all areas of school life. 
    • Conduct themselves in a professional manner in all situations.

        Koa Academy is offering a two-month internship for educators who would like to learn more about online schooling while gaining practical experience and professional development.

        Interns will work as assistants to our Pod Teachers across Grades 4–9 and multiple subjects. This is not a traditional content-teaching role. The focus is on facilitating learning, supporting teachers and students during live online sessions, and developing the skills needed to work effectively in an online school.

        Internship Details

        • Two-month fixed-term from 6 October to 4 December 2026
        • Half-day position (four hours per day)
        • Fully remote (must be based in South Africa)
        • A modest internship stipend will be provided. This is a developmental internship and not a full salaried teaching position.

        Key Responsibilities

          • Support Pod Teachers during live online sessions.
          • Support student engagement and learning.
          • Assist with the administration and organisation of online learning activities.
          • Participate actively in professional development and upskilling.
          • Work collaboratively with Koa teachers and other staff.
          • Conduct themselves professionally in all areas of school life.

          Candidate Requirements

          Applicants must:

          • Be SACE registered or be in the final year of a recognised teaching qualification.
          • Have their own computer and a reliable internet connection of at least 20 Mbps.
          • Be engaging and communicate confidently with students and colleagues.
          • Have strong administrative and organisational skills.

          Job Title: Junior IT Administrator

              Key Responsibilities:

              • System Optimization: Collaborate with Marketing and Operations to execute technical improvements that drive organizational efficiency.

              About Faure

              Faure is the Head of Merchandising, Promotions, & Catalogue at Takealot. He is responsible for onsite marketing, product merchandising, and promotional campaigns, ensuring customers have a seamless and engaging shopping experience. He has been at Takealot for over six years, helping bring e-commerce to millions of South Africans.

              Before that, he worked at a tech start-up developing proof-of-concept grocery shopping and payment apps and began his career as an investment analyst, gaining a strong foundation in business understanding and financial modelling.

              Majozi, Koa’s Head of Arts and Culture, is an award-winning South African musician. He rose to prominence in 2013 when he released his first EP, ‘Marvelous Light’. The track went to number 9 on the South African iTunes chart and resulted in him being signed with Universal Music South Africa. He has worked with internationally acclaimed artists such as The Lumineers and Mango Groove.
