Socialisation at Koa

From interactive Pods of 8 to clubs and in-person events, discover how students build friendships, form meaningful connections and experience a genuine sense of belonging at Koa.

Socialisation is an important part of a child’s development. And it’s about more than extracurricular activities. While extracurricular activities play an important role, social development also happens through meaningful everyday interactions, supportive relationships and active participation in communities where they feel they belong.

At Koa, we’ve intentionally built opportunities for social connection into the school day. Through interactive Pods of 8, collaborative learning experiences and clubs, students build friendships, form meaningful connections and become part of a school community where every student is known.

At the same time, we believe socialisation is a shared responsibility between school and home. While Koa intentionally creates opportunities for students to build meaningful relationships during the school day, parents play an equally important role in supporting their child’s social development through sport, hobbies, community activities and other in-person experiences. One of the advantages of online schooling is the flexibility it provides families to pursue these opportunities alongside their Koa schooling.

Meaningful Connections in Pods of 8

Every student belongs to a Pod of just eight students. Several times each week, students come together for Pod Connect, giving them dedicated time to check in, connect, play games and strengthen relationships with one another. Learning alongside the same classmates creates the consistency needed for genuine friendships to develop naturally over time. Students collaborate, share ideas, support one another, celebrate achievements and have fun together. These friendships often extend beyond the school day, with many students organising their own study sessions, chatting online and supporting one another long after lessons have ended.

Head of Arts and Culture:

Majozi

We’re thrilled to have award-winning South African musician Majozi as Koa’s Head of Arts and Culture. Majozi is passionate about creating opportunities for students to connect through creativity and explore their creative interests.

One recent initiative is Creative Circles, where students come together in small-group mentoring sessions to learn about the creative industry, ask questions and connect with others who share similar interests.

In-Person Events

While students build strong friendships online, there’s also the opportunity to spend time together in person. Throughout the year, Koa hosts a range of optional in-person events that give students and families the opportunity to connect face to face, strengthen friendships and create lasting memories together.

Socials

Our in-person socials are all about having fun together. From art jamming and laser tag to ziplining and ice skating, these events give students and families the opportunity to spend time together in person.

Educational Outings

Our educational outings combine meaningful connection with real-world learning. Whether dissecting sharks, exploring museums, visiting science centres or discovering local landmarks, students have the opportunity to explore, discover and learn together.

Hear From Our Students

No one tells the story of Koa better than our students. Watch as they share their experiences of making friends, building confidence and finding a genuine sense of belonging at Koa.

"While searching for the perfect school for my daughter in 2024 I found Koa and instantly fell in love. Not only are they an innovative school they didn't just focus on the academic side but also the social side which I hadn't seen anywhere else in my extensive research.

During the week they have online social activities but they also organise in-person socials twice a term. We eagerly awaited the first in-person social event and we felt very welcome by the teachers and fellow students from the moment we arrived. My daughter had so much fun and was able to socialise with the other students and build relationships with them. As a family the social aspect is very important to us and to feel part of the Koa family at the in-person events is the cherry on top.

Thank you Koa!”

Socialisation FAQs

Socialisation in an online school doesn’t happen by chance. It needs to be intentionally designed into the schooling experience. At Koa, we’ve intentionally built opportunities for social connection into every school day through our small Pods of just eight students, interactive lessons where students are encouraged to participate, collaborate and connect with one another, and online clubs. We also create opportunities for students and families to connect in person through optional socials and educational outings. At the same time, we believe socialisation is a shared responsibility between school and home. While Koa creates meaningful opportunities for connection during the school day and through optional in-person events, families play an equally important role by creating opportunities for their child to participate in sport, hobbies, community activities and other in-person experiences beyond school.
Yes. At Koa, we’ve intentionally designed the school day to help students build friendships and experience a genuine sense of belonging. Students learn in small Pods of just eight classmates, creating the consistency that allows genuine friendships to develop naturally over time. They collaborate, share ideas, support one another and regularly connect through Pod  Connect sessions. Beyond their Pod, students can join online clubs and attend optional in-person socials and educational outings. Many students also continue connecting beyond the school day, organising study sessions, chatting online and supporting one another long after lessons have ended.

No. Koa’s online clubs are optional, giving students the opportunity to explore new interests, develop existing passions and connect with peers who share similar interests. Students choose the clubs that appeal to them, while social connection is already built into everyday school life through Pods, collaborative learning and regular interaction with classmates.

Yes. Throughout the year, Koa hosts optional in-person socials and educational outings, giving students and families the opportunity to connect face to face. From fun social activities to hands-on educational experiences, these events strengthen friendships that have already developed online and help build an even stronger sense of community.

Engagement is built into the way we teach. Students learn in interactive Pods of just eight, where teachers encourage participation, discussion and collaboration. Regular Pod Connect sessions help students feel connected to their classmates, while collaborative learning experiences keep them actively involved in lessons. Beyond academics, students can join online clubs, arts and culture initiatives, and in-person events throughout the year. Combined with personalised teacher support and regular opportunities to connect with peers, this creates an engaging learning experience where students feel motivated, supported and part of a connected school community.

Yes. Koa offers a range of optional online clubs, arts and culture initiatives, and regular in-person socials and educational outings. Many families also choose Koa because the flexibility of online schooling gives students more opportunity to pursue sport and other extracurricular activities outside of school. We believe children benefit from opportunities to connect both through Koa and through the sport, hobbies and communities they participate in beyond school.
