Head of Technology
Job Title: Head of Technology
Location: Fully Remote (Based in South Africa)
Typical work hours: 40 hours per week.

The Opportunity
Koa Academy is looking for an experienced Head of Technology to lead our technology function through our next phase of growth.
Technology is central to how we deliver an individualised, robust online-school experience at scale. The Head of Technology will shape our technology strategy, lead the development of Koa’s proprietary education technology platform, and oversee software development, systems integration, IT operations, cybersecurity and data governance.
This is a senior leadership role for someone who can lead and develop a strong team, provide credible technical direction and turn ambitious ideas into achievable plans.

Key Responsibilities
- Team leadership: Lead and develop the IT team across software development, systems, infrastructure, information security and technical support.
- Team culture and performance: Build a collaborative, accountable and high-performing team by setting clear expectations, developing individual strengths and creating opportunities for ongoing growth.
- Technology strategy: Develop and deliver a multi-year technology strategy aligned with Koa’s educational model and growth ambitions.
- Platform development: Lead the continued development and evolution of Koa’s proprietary education technology platform.
- Roadmap and prioritisation: Translate organisational priorities and user needs into a clear, costed and achievable technology roadmap.
- Architecture and scalability: Guide technical and architectural decisions to ensure Koa’s systems remain secure, reliable, integrated and scalable.
- Delivery and governance: Establish effective processes for prioritisation, development, testing, release management and technical governance.
- Security and data: Oversee cybersecurity, POPIA compliance, data governance, access management, disaster recovery and business continuity.
- Executive advice: Advise executive leadership on technology opportunities, risks, investment decisions, AI and emerging technologies.
- Budget and partners: Manage technology budgets, vendors and external partners, including build-versus-buy and resourcing decisions.
- Cross-functional collaboration: Build strong collaboration between the technology team and Koa’s academic, operational and executive teams.
Skills & Experience
- The ability to move confidently between strategy, technical decisions, team leadership and practical problem-solving.
- Demonstrated experience leading, developing and motivating a multidisciplinary technology or engineering team.
- A strong people leader who creates clarity, builds accountability, develops talent and enables teams to perform at a high level.
- Experience establishing effective team structures, ways of working, performance expectations and development pathways.
- The ability to communicate technical priorities clearly, influence senior stakeholders and build strong cross-functional relationships.
- A strong track record of scaling software platforms or technology functions within a growing organisation.
- Experience developing and implementing technology strategy in support of wider organisational goals.
- Strong knowledge of cloud environments, APIs, systems integration, databases and modern software development.
- Experience overseeing the delivery of complex internal or customer-facing software platforms.
- A solid understanding of cybersecurity, data governance, system reliability and business continuity.
- Experience managing budgets, vendors, external partners and build-versus-buy decisions.
- Experience in EdTech, online education or environments managing sensitive learner or personal data would be advantageous.

Head of Technology

Location: Completely remote work, online, based in South Africa.

The Opportunity:
We’re looking for a dynamic, tech-savvy IT Administrator to join our team. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a digital environment, enjoys problem-solving, and is passionate about delivering excellent service. You’ll play a key role in ensuring smooth access to our tech platforms for students and parents, while bringing strong admin skills and a proactive mindset.
Key Responsibilities:
- Platform Management: Oversee and manage external educational platforms and associated student accounts to ensure optimal functioning.
- Data Accuracy: Maintain up-to-date and accurate student information across both internal and external systems.
- Technical Support: Provide technical support to both internal teams and end-users, ensuring issues are resolved swiftly and efficiently, maintaining a high level of user satisfaction.
- System Optimization: Contribute to the development, maintenance, and continuous improvement of internal IT systems and processes to ensure they meet the evolving needs of the academy.
- Collaboration: Work closely with different teams to enhance technology solutions that foster smooth and effective learning experiences for students.
Skills and Experience:
- Communication & Collaboration: Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to explain technical issues to non-technical users and collaborate effectively with internal teams and end-users.
- Detail-Oriented & Administrative Excellence: Exceptional attention to detail and excellent organizational skills. You’re someone who prides themselves on maintaining accuracy and order.
- Customer Service Experience: A passion for providing high-level support to both students and staff, ensuring smooth technical interactions and resolving issues quickly.
- Proven IT Skills: Strong knowledge and comfort with IT systems and online platforms. You are someone who enjoys troubleshooting, solving problems, and continuously improving your tech knowledge.
- Adaptable & Positive: Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, evolving environment, with a positive and solution-driven approach to challenges.
- Experience in Software Management: At least one year of experience managing and maintaining software and systems, ideally in an educational or tech-driven environment.

Reporting directly to the Head of IT and working closely with our Systems Manager, you will play a key role in the continuous improvement of our school-wide infrastructure. This role is ideal for someone who balances technical prowess with administrative excellence and is eager to benefit from mentorship to accelerate their career growth in EdTech.
Key Responsibilities:
- System Optimization: Collaborate with Marketing and Operations to execute technical improvements that drive organizational efficiency.
- Data Intelligence: Extract and synthesize data from marketing platforms, application systems, and our LMS to craft actionable reports for strategic decision-making.
- Technical Troubleshooting: Act as the Tier-2 escalation point for complex system bugs, integration failures, and logic errors.
- Functional Requirements: Translate management vision and system needs into clear functional requirements for our custom LMS.
- Change Management & Training: Empower staff by leading live training sessions and creating clear documentation for all new system features.
- Agile Collaboration: Maintain an up-to-date development backlog and roadmap, ensuring technical projects stay on track.
Skills and Experience:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience: 2+ years in technical systems implementation (EdTech or digital product experience is a plus).
- Technical Literacy: Deep understanding of Agile methodologies, software development lifecycles (SDLC), and data analytics tools.
- Systems Thinking: Ability to see the “big picture” and understand how individual technical changes impact the broader school ecosystem.
