Koa Foundation is the social impact arm of Koa Academy. It is an initiative dedicated to expanding access to high-quality, engaging education, with a focus on communities that face barriers to quality education.

Koa Foundation leverages Koa Academy’s proven online learning model, adapted to meet the unique needs and contexts of under-resourced schools and communities.

What We Do

Koa Foundation exists to help close the gap in educational opportunity across South Africa by providing learners in under-resourced schools with access to engaging, technology-enabled learning and personalised support. Our aim is to improve outcomes for individual students while transforming what’s possible for schools and communities.

We bring Koa Academy’s online learning model into community schools, tailoring it to local needs. To achieve this, we blend technology, expert teaching and on-the-ground support.

Our approach includes:

Together, this creates an active learning environment that strengthens academic outcomes while fostering accountability and belonging – even in rural or resource-constrained settings.

Why It Matters

Many learners across South Africa still face barriers to accessing quality education – from limited resources and overcrowded classrooms to gaps in teaching capacity and access to engaging learning tools. These challenges directly affect students’ performance, confidence, and long-term opportunities.

Koa Foundation is working to change this by using technology-enabled, teacher-supported learning to bridge these gaps and deliver world-class education to communities that have historically been left behind.

Our Impact So Far

Our current programme, funded by Anglo American and managed by JET, partners with 13 Quintile 1–3 schools and has supported over 932 learners to date.

This programme focuses on strengthening Mathematics and Physical Sciences – foundational subjects that open doors to tertiary education and pathways in science, technology and engineering.

Each learner’s progress is tracked through real-time dashboards, enabling teachers and facilitators to deliver targeted support and continually improve learning outcomes. Early results show stronger engagement, increased subject confidence and a renewed excitement for learning.

Be Part of the Momentum

We are actively looking for funding partners so that we can expand our impact. If you would like to find out more about Koa foundation, we’d love to connect.
